AOD Transmission - Level 2 / 3

 

This transmission comes with a high performance Superior Posi Shift Pac for firmer shifts and more holding power. Extra clutches are added to the direct clutch drum (Alto Red Eagle Power Pack). This is 40 to 60% more than stock. The direct clutch is the weak point in the stock AOD transmission. The stock overdrive band is replaced with a Raybestos Kevlar band. The intermediate roller clutch snap ring is replaced with a spiral plus locking ring. This snap ring is prone to jumping off on hard high speed 1-2 shifts. We install a super hard input shaft because the stock input shaft is bad about breaking with performance / heavy duty use. The Dominator Junior transmission comes with the #14 performance torque converter with your choice of 1800 or 2500 stall speeds. No trade-in needed on this one, the core charge is in the price. This transmission fits all small block Ford motors. Good for motors up to 550 horse power using pump gasoline, see chart below. Add torque converter upgrade if needed. Very good for towing in overdrive because it has an A+ overdrive servo with more holding force on the band. The A+ servo is 11% larger than the largest AOD servo Ford ever made.

AOD / 4R70W Transmission - Level 4

 This is a high performance non-electronic 4R70W transmission. This is accomplished by placing all of the internal parts of an electronic 4R70W or AODE into a non-electronic AOD case. Now you can have an AODE or 4R70W transmission in your 1993 and older Mustang without all the expense of an after market computer and related wiring. This is an easy drop-in direct replacement. Simply remove your AOD transmission and install the A O Dominator. This is a highly modified transmission and torque converter. This package deal comes with a 2200 / 2500 converter stall speed (#16) (non-lock-up only), but can be ordered with any stall speed you need. Some of the features of the A O Dominator are, a two inch wide Raybestos Pro Series Kevlar overdrive band, mechanical diode with Spiral "Plus" Ring Kit instead of the stock roller clutch that is prevalent to breakage and a high performance Superior Posi Shift Pac. This transmission has a 4R70W wide ratio gear set, 2.84 ratio first gear (15% lower than an AOD or AODE), 1.55 ratio second gear (5% lower than an AOD or AODE), non-lock-up torque converter, extra hard intermediate shaft (a must for high horse power motors), the Superior "A+" overdrive billet servo for added holding power and 8 clutches in the direct clutch drum (Alto Red Eagle Power Pack). This is 33% more than a stock 4R70W transmission, and the list goes on and on. This is a great transmission for towing and 4WD use.

Convert your Mustang with a 289 / 302 / 351W / 351C motor from a 3 speed C4 or C6 transmission to an AOD overdrive transmission. You get the Dominator Junior transmission and torque converter rated at 550 horse power, custom crossmember, Lokar throttle valve cable, speedometer gear based on tire height and gear ratio, AOD flywheel and a locking top dip stick. AOD / AODE Servo Pins with O-rings. Forward clutch failure and overdrive band failure can be the result of servo-pin-to-case-bore clearance. This excessive clearance allows leakage of release oil, which is forward clutch oil. This leakage reduces forward oil pressure and can allow overdrive band drag in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. Replace the OEM servo pin with a Sonnax pin which has an o-ring to positively seal against the case bore. A snap ring has been provided to secure the piston to the pin. The AODE pin on left has 2 O-rings. The AOD pin on right has 1 O-ring. Cost $16.00

The direct clutch has always been the weak link on AOD / AODE type transmissions. So we custom make these master kits with a Red Eagle Power Pack and Kolene steels in the direct clutch. The balance of the clutches are Alto regular. Before this you would have to buy a full Red Eagle master kit or a full stock type kit plus a direct Red Eagle Power Pack to get the direct red power pack. These kits represent a large savings over the other two options. No one else sells this kit. To order one of the AOD kits you must have all cast iron drums or all steel drums (3), if not you must tell us what drum doesn't match.

#10S. The throttle valve plug wears the sleeve, allowing throttle valve feed oil to leak past the plug and exhaust . Uncontrollable throttle pressure due to oil loss is a common complaint in vehicles with an AOD transmission. This results in low line pressure and poor throttle and shift timing adjustments. The hardened steel throttle valve plug continuously reciprocates within the aluminum throttle valve sleeve, thus wearing the inside diameter of the sleeve. This wear allows throttle valve feed oil to leak past the plug and exhaust, resulting in poor line rise. We have found this part to be bad on almost everyone we checked. (This part always wears out 99% of the time and should be replaced on every rebuild.) Cost $26.00

Transmission Cooling: You must have a transmission cooler in your radiator regardless of what someone has told you for the transmission to last. Auxiliary coolers are just that, in addition to. Water cools 32 times better (faster) than air always, period. The transmission fluid comes directly from the torque converter at a much higher temperature than the water in your radiator and is cooled to the water temperature fast. Then it goes to the auxiliary cooler to be cooled far below the water temperature. If you don't need a cooler in your radiator why does GM spend all that money doing so? If you wanted to cool a red hot piece of steel fast would you stick it in water or air, see the point. For the best cooling you need both water and air cooling for the transmission to be cooler than the motor.

#69. Any change in a vehicle's tire size or rear axle ratio will cause the speedometer reading to be inaccurate. The Electronic Ratio Adapter (ERA) is designed to correct this problem. With the ERA, you simply hook up four wires, set the DIP switches according to the calibration table included with your order, and you are ready to go.

What does the Electronic Ratio Adapter do?

The automotive industry has a great variety of part sizes, types, shapes and descriptions, but regardless of make, model or year, a few things are standard. One of those standards has been the number of revolutions a speedometer cable will make for each mile traveled.  Nowadays, electronic pulses have replaced the rotating cable, but the same principle applies. The Pulse Ratio (the number of pulses per mile traveled) remains the same, regardless of speed, since the same distance is travelled and the same number of pulses have occurred each mile no matter what the speed was during that mile.

However, this Pulse Ratio can be made to vary from the true when modifications are made which change the number of electronic pulses per mile on a particular vehicle. This is most commonly caused by changing the tire size (increasing the outside diameter of the tires will cause the tire to travel further before making a complete revolution), but other modifications could have the same result. When the Pulse Ratio is thrown off, the speedometer/odometer will be inaccurate and corrections must be made.

This relative difference between true speed and the speed indicated on the speedometer is called the Variance Ratio, and it is corrected using the Electronic Ratio Adapter. Cost $169.00

You can add to or remove from this kit as needed. An AOD with a 10 1/4" tail housing is only 1/4" longer than an early Mustang C4 therefore you should be able to reuse your old driveshaft and yoke. In the Comment Box: We need to know your motor size and year, year of car, carburetor brand, tire height, rear end ratio and if possible the number of teeth on your speedometer drive gear located on the output shaft. The exclusive floor mount brackets allow for installation above or below the floor on the transmission tunnel. #29. AOD adapter for a Holley carburetor to install the throttle valve cable correctly. Usually this part will correct a hard light throttle 1-2 shift. 1979 to 1993 Fox Body Mustang Crossmember

#RCMFB. This is a direct bolt-in for 1982 - 1993 Mustangs with 4 1/2 inches between the crossmember mounting brackets. On 1979 to 1981 Mustangs with 2 3/4 inch measurement between the crossmember mounting brackets the brackets must be relocated. Fits standard and automatic transmissions. This crossmember is installed with the taller hump on the passenger side. It must be used with a transmission mount using bolts rather than studs. Cost $149.00

#94. This crossmember is a "double hump" design that simplifies installation of dual exhaust systems on "Fox" vehicles. The outer tubes aren't welded to the center support, and just can be adjusted to fit most engine / transmission combinations. It directly fits all "Fox" vehicles with a 4 1/2" dimension between the crossmember mounting brackets. It can be used on "Fox" vehicles with a 2 3/4" mounting dimension by relocating the brackets. It doesn't fit 1982 and later Continental or 1984 and later Mark VII, because they have a unique crossmember. Cost $83.00

It's now possible to install a Ford AOD overdrive transmission on a Ford FE 390 motor, ask. Transmission ratings are for non-supercharged systems using pump gasoline. Superchargers, Nitrous, 4WD, Oversize Tires and Weight will change these ratings. On Ford transmissions you may need to reuse your old shift lever. There will be an added $100.00 fee on foreign transmission sales for testing in our test truck.

Even after a complete rebuild, internal leaks and normal case wear can effect a transmission's lube flow and operating pressure, changing the original calibrations and drastically reducing overall performance and longevity.  In addition, flaws and oversights in the manufacturer's initial design do not usually show up until a particular transmission model has been on the road for a few years.
